Welcome to the 100 deadliest days of summer

On Behalf of | May 29, 2024 | Motor Vehicle Accidents

While many Portland residents look forward to the halcyon days of summer, there is no doubt that the three-month span roughly bookended by the Memorial Day and Labor Day holidays is a time of enhanced danger on the state’s highways.

Perhaps even more tragically, teens are particularly at risk of causing or being involved in fatal collisions. Read on to learn why the summer months are so hazardous.

More inexperienced drivers behind the wheel

Getting a driver’s license is usually a ticket to expanded freedom for teenagers. Many may have just completed a semester of driver’s education but have little actual experience behind the wheel — particularly after dark. They may do fine under normal driving conditions but panic during a driving emergency.

People head out on vacation

Summer is when most families tend to go on vacation, as the kids are out of school and the weather lures vacationers to explore the coast, the mountains and the lakes. All the extra travelers add to congested highways, longer driving times and shorter tempers that can cause simple mistakes to turn into episodes of road rage.

Impaired and intoxicated drivers abound

There are plenty of celebrations over the course of the summer — the aforementioned Memorial and Labor Day weekends and the glorious Fourth of July are just three. There are also birthdays, weddings and plenty of outdoor activities like fairs, festivals and concerts.

All of the above create opportunities for people to overindulge in their favorite intoxicating substances. While there is nothing wrong with having a good time, there is plenty wrong with driving while impaired by drugs or alcohol. Even over-the-counter medications can make someone unfit to operate a vehicle.

Protect your rights after an accident

Even the safest drivers can be victims of devastating collisions caused by irresponsible, at-fault drivers. Learning more about your right to pursue civil justice after a car accident is a wise move to make.
