Some common causes of misdiagnosis

On Behalf of | Jul 24, 2024 | Medical Malpractice

Obtaining an accurate diagnosis is the first step in medical treatment. If a patient is misdiagnosed, then they will not receive the treatment they need.

Medicine is a very complicated field, and doctors do occasionally make mistakes. However, innocent mistakes and negligence are two very separate matters. A misdiagnosis resulting from negligence is medical malpractice.

What are some of the more common causes of misdiagnosis?

Not listening to the patient

Medical technology has advanced dramatically in recent decades. There are advanced tests that can diagnose an array of health conditions within minutes. Nonetheless, some of the most effective methods are still old-fashioned. To gain an idea of the issue, a doctor should listen to their patient. Nobody knows better how they are feeling than the patient.

Unfortunately, this is an area of treatment that some doctors neglect. Not listening to patients can result in doctors missing vital information during the diagnostic process.

Not referring the patient

Doctors can be proud, but the reality is that no doctor knows everything. That is why there are different fields within medicine, such as oncology, trauma, radiology, intensive care and much more. Unfortunately, pride and stubbornness can get in the way of accurately diagnosing a patient

When doctors are out of their depth, they have a duty to refer the patient to another doctor who can help them. If this doesn’t happen, then the omission by the doctor could be medical malpractice.

For medical malpractice to occur, the doctor’s legal duty of care must have been breached. The patient must also have suffered harm as a direct result of that breach. To find out more about medical malpractice, consider seeking legal guidance.
