Are you prepared for winter driving in Portland?

On Behalf of | Dec 7, 2024 | Motor Vehicle Accidents

December is the most dangerous month of the year for Oregon drivers. In the last decade, there have been over 4,900 accidents each year.  This is due to many reasons — impaired drivers, slippery roads and more holiday traveling — but there are ways to protect yourself from accidents and seek compensation if someone causes your wreck.

Below are some useful tips from the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT).

Remain proactive on the roads

As you approach shaded spots, off-ramps or bridges, reduce speed to avoid skids from invisible black ice. Now is also a good time to take your vehicle in for a check-up. Make sure they inspect your brakes and check the tread on your tires. Get your headlights cleaned and replace worn-out windshield wipers.

Remember that you’re only as safe as the others on the road

While keeping your eyes on the road, be watchful for potentially intoxicated drivers who may be swerving, or driving too fast (or too slowly). Give them a wide berth and if you feel it’s necessary, pull over to a safe spot and call 911 to report them. The lives you save could be yours and your family’s.

If the visibility worsens, make sure that other cars are able to see you. Turn on your lights to help others see you coming.

Never tailgate the vehicle ahead

This tip is good year-round, but when bad weather hits, it’s vital. Give extra room between you and the car ahead of you. If you’re following an 18-wheeler, you won’t be able to see what lies ahead on the road, and that could lead to a fatal accident.

If the worst occurs

Collisions can cause some of the most serious accidents, including:

  • Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs)
  • Paralysis
  • Amputations
  • Burns

Medical bills for these cases that can cause permanent disability and life-long medical care can exceed your own insurance coverage. Holding the negligent driver (and their own insurance company) accountable can help you immensely.
